Featured Shelter of the Week: Blue Sky Dog Rescue
This week’s featured shelter of the week is another one of our Twitter friends (@BlueSkyDogRescu), Blue Sky Dog Rescue! Blue Sky Dog Rescue is a non-profit, no-kill rescue group in Byhalia, Mississippi dedicated to the rescue, foster and adoption placement of dogs in need in the Mississippi/Tennessee area. The group is run entirely by volunteers and funded solely by donations.

The BSDR core volunteers from left to right: Karen Cook, Chris Selph, Donna Orman (founder) and Heather Branstetter
The rescue started when founder Donna Orman brought in two fosters, after whom the group is now named. Bleu was at a local shelter scheduled to be euthanized the next day and Skyee was a three-month old pup wandering along the side of the road, lost, scared and hungry. After finding forever homes for both, Donna knew the rewarding feeling couldn’t be replaced by anything else.
Now, the group brings in up to six dogs at a time to place in forever homes. In some cases, the group’s volunteers will also foster to provide more space. They have also begun working with local shelters to pull dogs off of death row to find a forever home.
Currently, the rescue is at capacity, with six dogs looking for forever homes. Here’s a quick look at a couple who would make a great addition to your family! There is more information available on each of the dogs listed below on the rescue’s petfinder.com page. You can also find a list of all dogs currently available for adoption (six!) here.
If you would like to help BSDR, but don’t think your family is the right fit for a dog, consider volunteering. You can email the group at blueskydogrescue1@gmail.com or call at 901-212-3698 to get more information. The rescue also has a wonderful donation website if you would like to provide financial support (reminder that the group is fully non-profit and is run solely by donations and volunteers).
Gizmo
Gizmo is a full-grown, male terrier mix, who, like all Blue Sky dogs, is up to date on all shots and heartworm preventative, is microchipped and neutered. His profile says he is a sweet, precious, mischievous little guy. He has the typical terrier attitude and a bad hair day everyday. He weighs 7 lbs. and is crate trained. Additionally, Gizmo seems to come from a rough background. It may take some time to gain his trust as it appears he was neglected with little to no human interaction early on. However, once trust is built he is a sweet little dog that would make a great forever friend! If you would like more information about Gizmo, you can see his full profile here. You can also e-mail Blue Sky Dog Rescue at blueskydogrescue1@gmail.com or call at 901-212-3698. If you are in the Byhalia, MS area, the rescue is located at 533 DeSoto Rd.
Cody
Cody is a 1-2 year old, beautiful male golden retriever. As mentioned above, Cody is current on all shots, heart worm negative/on preventative, micro-chipped and neutered. His profile says he is a big teddy bear! He’s calm, gentle and good with kids and other dogs. He weighs in around 65 lbs. and has the perfect golden retriever temperament. Who wouldn’t want to bring this sweet guy home? If you would like more information about Cody, you can see his full profile here. You can also e-mail Blue Sky Dog Rescue at blueskydogrescue1@gmail.com or call at 901-212-3698. If you are in the Byhalia, MS area, the rescue is located at 533 DeSoto Rd.
Cam and Bandit

Looking for a younger pup to bring into your home? Cam or Bandit might be your answer. Cam (left) is a 6-8 month old lab mix who weighs in at just over 40 lbs. He is a playful and sweet puppy who loves children and other dogs. Bandit (right) is a 6-9 month old precious little boy who showed up at a local veterinary office. He is a sweet, happy young puppy who deserves a loving home. He is mixed breed and fixed. If you’d like more information on either of these puppies, e-mail Blue Sky Dog Rescue at blueskydogrescue1@gmail.com or call at 901-212-3698. If you are in the Byhalia, MS area, the rescue is located at 533 DeSoto Rd. You can also see Cam’s full profile here and Bandit’s full profile here.
