Puppymill Capital, USA
Ever wondered where that cute puppy in the pet store came from? While not always true, it likely came from a puppy mill. The store clerk might tell you “our puppies come from breeders,” or “all of our puppies come from USDA-inspected facilities.” Both of those might be true, but neither one mean their puppies don’t come from puppy mills.
The Humane Society of the United States estimates that between 2 and 4 million dogs are born in puppy mills each year and roughly 500,000 puppies are sold annually in the 3,500 pet stores that sell puppies (according to the Pet Industry Advisory Council).
So what’s the big deal? We could spend weeks talking through the issues associated with puppy mills, the terrible conditions and the harm they cause dogs. Or, you could take a look inside one. The below video is from a report done by ABC on the place being called the Puppymill Capital, USA. The report focuses on Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and the Amish population notorious in the area for breeding puppies. But don’t be fooled, there are thousands of other puppy mills out there and they are certainly not limited to any group of people.
Please keep this video in the back of your mind the next time you pop by your local pet store and see the cute little puppy on display.
